Dear Reader

The purpose of this blog, dedicated to the early residents interred at the Presumpscot/East Deering/Grand Trunk Cemetery, continues to be to tell whatever stories remain for these people, through research, shared information from their descendants, or from other genealogical and historical detectives.

But, it is more than that; it is also to provide a vehicle for chronicling the events which have taken place since the project,"Unearthing the Roots of the Back Cove and East Deering Communities" was undertaken by two former Girl Scouts nearly 10 years ago.

I intentionally include photos of those events that happened at the cemetery, as well as photographs of the people who are particpants. I intend that this might be an historical and pictorial record, so that they might be remembered for their participation and commitment over the years.

For almost ten years, the help, encouragement, and support of the Portland Cemeteries Department has been invaluable in protecting and preserving this small, but significant historical gem.  Although, the Grand Trunk Cemetery is only a remnant of what it once was, the accomplishments of today, would not have been possible without these city employees.

Unfortunately, there are very few photos of Bob.
This one was taken in  October 2014.  Bob is on the left.

Robert 'Bob' McMann, Supervisor of Cemeteries has been a constant support and help from the beginning, despite his numerous responsibilities.  Over the years he has become an advocate and a friend.

Last Friday, October 13th, Bob retired after working for the City of Portland for 30 years.  He will be greatly missed for his willing spirit, his kindness, and all of the extra efforts he gave to help and support this project, and me.

All the pictures of Bob are of his work.  Here he and his crew are prparing the site
for the newly received Veterans' markers.
Thank you, Bob, for all you did to keep the Grand Trunk Cemetery alive and well taken care of.  We wish you many happy and healthy days as you begin this new adventure in your life!
